Cuba

Cuba is in the Caribbean and is world famous for its high quality tobacco and cigars. Even before Columbus discovered Cuba in 1492 were all tobacco grown in Cuba by the Cohiba's a local Indian tribe. Cuba is a poor country and can hardly develop itself since the US embargo in 1962.

Most tobacco plantations are here still maintain full manual. No tractors with diesel engines but oxen pulling the plow. Everything is done here by hand and you can taste it in the finished product. Nowadays produced 180 million cigars annually, of which 90 million handmade cigars are exported abroad.

The tobacco from Cuba has an exceptionally high quality, the soil and the humid tropical climate and a centuries-old experience of growing tobacco. The tropical heat is often a mist over the fields where the tobacco grows. A natural shade deck. There are several regions in Cuba where the tobacco grows.

The famous Vuelta Abajo region in the province of Pinar Del Rio is the area at the western tip of Cuba, nestled between mountains and coast and is the largest province. It is heuveligachtig, green and lush, somewhat like Southeast Asia. The soil and climate conditions are perfect for growing tobacco, the main industry. Here, is cultivated to 70% of the Cuban tobacco. The bottom is of red, sandy clay. Full of minerals that give Cuban cigars somewhat of a salty touch. Tobacco is grown on small fields, often privately owned, although the tobacco is sold at a fixed price to the government. The fields give the landscape the image of a patchwork. Everywhere can be seen small farms and typical dry sheds. Most of the land is used in this area for the cultivation of wrapper, the other for filler and binder.

Center of the island north of Trinidad is the large tobacco field Remedios, the oldest tobacco fields of Cuba. From this area also comes in good Sigarenfabriek Elephant used in its blend. Then there are two tobacco fields near Vuelta Abajo namely Semi Vuelta, Partido. Located in the South East still Oriente, a smaller area north of Santiago de Cuba. In this area is primarily tobacco are grown for the production of cigarettes.

Because there is no export of Cuban cover or wrapper there are several countries in the world who grow tobacco with the original Cuban seed. Especially in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras. Yet these tobaccos have different properties and characteristics than the tobacco grown in Cuba.

Cuban cigars stand for quality and class. Typically, the full character of a strong and relatively heavy. Precisely for this reason very suitable for the experienced smoker. They are characterized by relatively fixed rolled cigars and therefore have a considerable tensile strength. While smoking unfolds a strong spicy and earthy aroma with notes of leather with a slight peppery taste salty.
Partagás

Cigars Partagás brand are among the most coveted cigars in the world. The brand is named after the Catalan Don Jaime Partagás. He emigrated from Spain to Cuba in 1831. Having first worked for years for other manufacturers, Jaime Partagás in 1845 started his own factory in Havana. His factory is to this day the most famous and visited factory in Havana. This factory is located at Calle Industria 520, just behind the Capitolio Habanero, the Capitol in the center of town. Formerly stood on the site of the Capitol is a station. The tobacco could easily be raised and the cigars are discharged. State "in 1845 Partagás - Real Fábrica de Tabacos" on the property, which means royal tobacco factory. The factory had at that time many noble and even royal customers from Europe and Asia. Jaime Partagás cigars on Calle Industria 520 was produced there was another manufacturer at this property, namely Villar y Villar. That mark was with Henry Clay one of Havana's most famous brands. How dynamic is the cigar world! Now the two brands are not or much less known.

Jaime Partagás was the first cigar manufacturer who took a lecturer employed to cigar makers to read the newspaper. The workers had fun in their work and that the quality was very good. Jaime Partagás was a very passionate entrepreneur and bought the best plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region famous. Because of this he had the best tobacco material to make his cigars. Both the filler, binder and wrapper tobacco out of this beautiful region. The constant use of good tobacco products has been made enormously successful. Furthermore Jaime Partagás has much developed and improved the storage and fermentation of tobacco. In 1868 Jaime Partagás was murdered on his own plantation in Vuelta Abajo. The story goes that it is done to a runaway love affair. His son José Partagás took over the business. In 1900 the company was sold to Ramon Cifuentes and Francisco Pego Pita.

Fortunately Cifuentes was also a very driven manufacturer, which has endured tough times to keep the cigar factory. Around the turn of the century Cuba was faced with a trade embargo deployed by America and there was a lot of exports away. At that time, it exported 118 million cigars Cuba to America. The strategy of Cifuentes was to acquire several brands in order to maintain the right to exist under these challenging conditions.

Cuba was in the years that were also still plagued by many strikes and finally the communist revolution. In 1927 they took over the Ramon Allones brand. Other brands which they have taken or have set themselves include La Intimidad, Coruncho, La Eminencia, El Corojo, Particulares, Prudencio Rabell, El Cambio and La Real.

In 2011, the employees of Unicorn visited this factory. Just in time, because there are no more cigars produced in connection with major maintenance since 2012-2013. Unfortunately, no construction activity has been observed. Once again production will take place, is a mystery.

1938. and in 1940 came to death Ramon and Francisco. Only the Cifuentes family was about to take over the company and went under the name Cifuentes y Cia. In 1954 the family took the Bolivar brand and also La Gloria Cubana. In 1958 was 25% of the total exported cigars from Cuba in the factory of Partagás.

Just before and after the Cuban revolution Partagás was the best selling brand in Cuba. In 1961, the Cifuentes family left the country and left the factory. Shortly after leaving the factory was nationalized. The production is without this family continued success. Mid 90s Partagás was the second best-selling brand, after Monte Cristo. The average sale was about 10 million cigars a year.

After the revolution and the consequent emerged trade embargo imposed by America the Partagás brand was created for the American market by General Cigar in the Dominican Republic. The cigars of the Partagás brand are made from tobaccos from all countries except Cuba. In Cuba, there is to this day Partagás cigars made with only Cuban tobacco in Partagásfabriek in Havana, sold by Habanos SA. It will be exciting what's going to happen with this production of Partagás in the Dominican Republic is going to import the US market Cuban cigars again.

Later Altadis has acquired a stake in Habanos SA, the export business of Cuban cigars. Altadis has then ensured that the range is considerably downsized.
